Ali Azmat

Azmat presents one of his signature solitary figures in this painting through dazzling contrasts and a succulent application of paint. The intense flesh tones of the recumbent figure are framed by a pool of folds and pleats in fluorescent turquoise. A single candle, tipped over, accentuates the loneliness of the figure and lends pathos and a sense of extinguished desire to the scene. The painting is a vital example of Azmat’s extensive earlier work on the drama of the human form.
